Faster Algorithms Parameterized by Clique-width

چکیده
Many NP-hard problems, such as Dominating Set, are FPT parameterized by clique-width. For graphs of clique-width k given with a kexpression, Dominating Set can be solved in 4knO(1) time. However, no FPT algorithm is known for computing an optimal k-expression. For a graph of clique-width k, if we rely on known algorithms to compute a (23k − 1)expression via rank-width and then solving Dominating Set using the (23k − 1)-expression, the above algorithm will only give a runtime of 42 3k nO(1). There have been results which overcome this exponential jump; the best known algorithm can solve Dominating Set in time 2O(k 2)nO(1) by avoiding constructing a k-expression [Bui-Xuan, Telle, and Vatshelle. Fast dynamic programming for locally checkable vertex subset and vertex partitioning problems. Theoret. Comput. Sci., 2013. doi: 10.1016/j.tcs.2013.01.009]. We improve this to 2O(k log k)nO(1). Indeed, we show that for a graph of clique-width k, a large class of domination and partitioning problems (LC-VSP), including Dominating Set, can be solved in 2O(k log k)nO(1). Our main tool is a variant of rank-width using the rank of a 0-1 matrix over the rational field instead of the binary field.

متن کاملParameterized Algorithms for Parity Games
Determining the winner of a Parity Game is a major problem in computational complexity with a number of applications in verification. In a parameterized complexity setting, the problem has often been considered with parameters such as (directed versions of) treewidth or clique-width, by applying dynamic programming techniques. In this paper we adopt a parameterized approach which is more inspir...
متن کاملIntractability of Clique-Width Parameterizations
We show that Edge Dominating Set, Hamiltonian Cycle, and Graph Coloring are W [1]-hard parameterized by clique-width. It was an open problem, explicitly mentioned in several papers, whether any of these problems is fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by the clique-width, that is, solvable in time g(k) · nO(1) on n-vertex graphs of clique-width k, where g is some function of k only. Our...
متن کاملClique-width: on the price of generality
Many hard problems can be solved efficiently when the input is restricted to graphs of bounded treewidth. By the celebrated result of Courcelle, every decision problem expressible in monadic second order logic is fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph. Moreover, for every fixed k ≥ 0, such problems can be solved in linear time on graphs of treewidth at ...
متن کاملFixed Parameter Complexity of Distance Constrained Labeling and Uniform Channel Assignment Problems - (Extended Abstract)
We study the complexity of a group of distance-constrained graph labeling problems when parameterized by the neighborhood diversity (nd), which is a natural graph parameter between vertex cover and clique width. Neighborhood diversity has been used to generalize and speed up FPT algorithms previously parameterized by vertex cover, as is also demonstrated by our paper. We show that the Uniform C...
